OOIDA Call to Action – Nevada members
May 19, 2009

Attention: Nevada truckers. ENOUGH is ENOUGH. State lawmakers need to know that you are fed up with efforts to dig into your pockets for more money.

If a bill moving through the state Senate becomes law, fueling up in Nevada could cost truckers an extra 7 cents per gallon. That’s at minimum.

The Senate Taxation Committee voted to advance legislation after inserting a provision to increase the tax on fuel that is used by large trucks. Other vehicles that use diesel would be unaffected. THAT’S RIGHT – the bill increases the tax rate ONLY for truckers. Apparently, supporters think that’s their best hope of getting the increase approved. We CANNOT stand for this.

AB235 would increase the state’s 27.75-cent-per-gallon tax on diesel for truckers to 34.75 cents. With the exception of Washoe County, every county throughout the state could also ask voters whether to index the diesel tax for all users. Washoe County is not included in the provision because voters already approved fuel indexing.

The bill’s next stop is the full Senate. If approved there, it would need approval of changes in the Assembly before it could go to Gov. Jim Gibbons. The governor has made it clear he is opposed to tax increases, but we cannot rely on a veto. Also, it’s possible that without strong opposition lawmakers could pursue a veto override.

Contact your state Senator today at 800-995-9080 and ask them to vote NO on AB235.
