5/4/09-Gov. David Paterson signed multiple pieces of legislation into law authorizing the use of red light cameras in more areas in the state. New York City has relied on Big Brother to help with ticketing for 15 years.
One new law – A7330 – allows Yonkers to install the cameras at 25 intersections to catch motorists who don’t stop in time.
As part of a five-year pilot program in the city, cameras will snap photos of the license plates of vehicles running red lights. A $50 ticket will be mailed to the vehicles’ owners, regardless of who was driving at the time. Motorists with three or more outstanding violations would be prohibited from renewing their vehicle’s registration.
