OOIDA National Call to Action - Cap and Trade
June 26, 2009

URGENT!

The House of Representatives is taking up debate on the American Clean Energy & Security Act (HR2454) today.  This legislation is also being referred to as the "cap and trade" bill or the "climate change" bill.

OOIDA opposes HR2454.

As it is currently written, HR2454 would be disastrous for the trucking industry in the United States. For example, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that this bill will raise the price of gasoline by up to 77 cents over the next decade - surely diesel would likely rise by at least as much. To make matters worse, unlike a traditional fuel tax increase, none of the revenue raised will go into the Highway Trust Fund or be spent on our highways.

Though OOIDA and other highway user organizations attempted to work with Congressional leaders to deal with problems in the bill that will negatively impact the trucking community, by and large our concerns fell on deaf ears.

To add insult to injury, lawmakers willing to help truckers and other highway users are being denied any opportunity to make changes to HR2454.  The House Congressional leadership has decided to push ahead with the bill without allowing lawmakers to offer amendments to HR2454 when it is debated by the full House of Representatives later today or on Saturday.

Please call the office of your Representative in the U.S. House ASAP to tell them to oppose HR2454.

To contact your Representative in the House, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and provide the operator with your home zip code. The operator will connect you with the office of your elected representative.  If the Capitol switchboard is busy, call your lawmaker’s office direct.

You are also welcome to call OOIDA at (800) 444-5791. Association staff will be happy to help put you in touch with your elected officials in Washington.

-----------------------------------------

Remember, taking a few minutes out of your day to make a few phone calls to your elected representatives can make a major difference in how those individuals understand and view issues affecting you and your livelihood.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call the Association at 1-800-444-5791.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE CAPITOL HILL TAKE NOTICE.
TOGETHER WE CAN DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF AMERICA'S TRUCKERS.
