OOIDA Call to Action – Arizona members
April 6, 2010

Attention: Arizona truckers! Your help is needed to put an end to an effort in the Arizona Senate that would keep large trucks to the right on roadways with three or more lanes. Contact your state senator to make sure they know that you are opposed to this bill to restrict lane use.

Specifically, HB2300 would limit lane use for trucks weighing at least 26,000 pounds or trucks pulling trailers weighing 6,000 pounds or more. Affected trucks would be required to stay in the farthest right-hand lane or in the lane immediately to the left of that lane unless otherwise posted.

It needs to be made clear to your state senator that adopting lane restrictions for any class of vehicle is an ill-advised step to take. When vehicles are restricted to certain lanes, you end up with an increase in vehicle interactions, not a reduction.

This isn’t good for congestion or highway safety. Lane restrictions simply discourage smart, safe driving practices as more vehicles tailgate and make unsafe passing maneuvers in all lanes.

House lawmakers have already approved the bill. If the Arizona Senate isn’t made aware of the many concerns about lane restrictions, it soon could be headed to the governor’s desk.
