7/29/10-A bill in the Senate Transportation Committee would double the fines for certain offenses committed by hazmat haulers.
Sponsored by Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union, S182 would make violations subject to double fines include moving violations, such as speeding, reckless and careless driving, illegal passing and disobeying traffic signals.
Scutari wrote that “the public interest and well being requires that the operators of vehicles that transport hazardous materials be held to the highest standards.”
Revenue generated from the higher fines would be deposited into the state’s Highway Safety Fund.
