OOIDA National CALL-TO-ACTION
July 8, 2011
Dear Member,
As you probably know by now, the US DOT has given the go ahead to granting operating authority to trucking companies from Mexico for operation throughout the United States. FMCSA says the first trucks could start crossing the border as early as next month.
OOIDA is pulling out all the stops to try to put a halt to this ill-advised move. We have filed suit against FMCSA. Also Congressman Peter DeFazio and Congressman Duncan Hunter have introduced legislation that would go a long way to making sure a Mexican truck pilot program would be done correctly.
BUT NEITHER OF THE INITIATIVES STANDS MUCH CHANCE OF STOPPING THE PROGRAM FLAT. THIS IS WHERE YOUR HELP AND ACTION IS CRITICAL. Your member of Congress is on the appropriations committee. This committee has the power to withhold funds for the Mexican truck border opening and to stop it flat.
Please contact your member of Congress and ask that they support efforts to cut off funding for the Mexican truck border opening. The Mexican truck program will cost U.S. jobs, it will add costs for taxpayers and it will threaten highway safety.
Congress will be in session next week. Please call on Monday and every day after that until this is resolved in our favor. The big money is on the other side of this issue, but with a big enough voice we can still prevail.
To contact your Congressman, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and provide the operator with your home zip code. The operator will connect you with the office of your Congressman.
You are also welcome to call OOIDA at (800) 444-5791. Association staff will be happy to help put you in touch with your Congressman.
Thank you for your support and involvement.
Todd Spencer
