Summary of Curriculum:

  1. Developing the Business Plan – Developing a business plan will lay the foundation of the business. This segment will review how to set up a personal business plan.

    3. Worksheets
    4. CD on calculating the cost-of-operations
  1. Understanding Costs and Pay Methods. This portion is geared towards understanding how to calculate the best method of payment.
    1. Mileage Pay
    2. Percent of line-haul
    3. Flat rate
    4. Converting to a common pay method
    5. Worksheet on comparing fuel costs.
  1. Time Management/Cost Control – Make sure any time that is used is used productively. This will teach drivers how to carefully plan their time and avoid ending up in a financial hole.

  1. Types of Insurance – A wide variety of insurance plans are required under Federal Regulations along with a host of other insurance that may or may not be needed. We will review the types of insurance that are required by federal regulations.

    5. Unladen, “Bobtail” or Non-Trucking Liability
    6. Worker’s Compensation
    7. Occupational Accident and Health
  1. Record Keeping – There are various forms, licenses and permits that are required for trucking. This section will inform students on which documents are necessary and how to obtain them.

  1. Business Structures – This will cover the different types of business structures and which one each individual would qualify under.
    1. Sole proprietorship

  1. Income Taxes – Filing taxes is a very important part of owning a business. We will help determine which forms need to be filed and provide a copy of the forms.

  1. Leasing Regulations – An OOIDA staff member will teach on the leasing regulations per FMCSA.

  1. Broker Agreements/Factoring – This portion will give an opportunity to discuss some tips on broker agreements.
  1. Tour of OOIDA Headquarters – The class will take a tour of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Headquarters in Grain Valley, MO.
  1. Understanding/Filing for Authority – An authority expert will be teaching on the requirements to obtain your own authority and answering questions. We will also examine the requirements for a new entrant safety audit.

  1. CMCI – A CMCI representative will discuss the drug and alcohol consortium requirements.
  1. “Spec’ing” – An OOIDA staff member will review the best way to spec a truck.
  1. Financing – A representative from the department of finance will explain the options in financing a truck or trailer.
  1. Permits – This portion will help each person understand the requirements for permits.
