Board Member Bio

Mr. Rick Craig, executive director of the OOIDA Foundation, Inc., has 17 years experience as an Owner Operator. He has served on the OOIDA's Board of Directors since 1988, and joined the association's staff full-time , and became executive director of the Foundation in 1991. In 1992 he was elected Association Treasurer.

Under his direction, the OOIDA Foundation has developed, produced, and distributed two safety videos for professional truck drivers. The first, What's Stopping You, explained the procedures for drivers to follow to keep their truck brakes in adjustment. The second video, Dealing with Truck Driver Fatigue, supplied drivers with information about sleep, napping, and fatigue countermeasures.

The foundation has also been involved in several scientific surveys of the Owner/Operator segment of the trucking industry. Under Mr. Craig's direction, the foundation partnered with the American Trucking Associations to collect data for the Federal Highway Administration of trucker knowledge of fatigue issues. The foundation also partnered with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute to survey trucker opinions of mandatory on-board monitoring devices for the FHWA. In addition, the foundation surveyed the owner operator segment of the industry to determine professional trucker attitudes, beliefs, and practices on hours of service for the association's comments on FHWA's advance notice of a proposed rulemaking on hours of service
