Frank E. Owen
Number of years trucking:
35
Make, model and year of truck:
Sold truck in 2004 and was going to retire, but decided to go company driver.
What type of load do you typically haul:
Flatbed and van
Family information:
Married to wife, Betty, who teamed with me for 20 years and J.J. miniature poodle. One daughter, Cindy, who lives in Lorena, TX.
Favorite trucking story or moment:
I have so many stories, my favorite just doesn't come to mind right now. Stop me on the road or in a truckstop and I can tell you some hair-raising experiences, especially about a truckstop that was made available to us in Utah in a snow storm, but until this day, we haven't found it again yet!!!!
What do you like about the industry?:
I like the part of being your own boss, to a certain extent, and most of the people in our business are really great guys and gals. I really think the industry has gotten a lot better since so many man and wife teams have gotten into it. We have really met some fantastic folks out on the road.
What do you dislike about the industry?:
Don't like cheap freight rates, lying dispatchers, and truckstop cowboys. Lot of regulations are still in horse and buggy days.
What makes you successful as an owner-operator?:
My wife!! (Had to put that in). But really watching my money; getting with good companies, which is getting harder to do everyday, and taking care of the tool you work with.
Why are you a member of OOIDA?:
Finally a voice that is getting heard everywhere, especially in Washington. Very good communication through our magazine to other drivers. Working with and for owner-operators!!
Anything else you would like to add?:
Would like to see more drivers get involved with organization, especially company type drivers. They need us also.
