OOIDA Announces 2016 Scholarship Recipients

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2016-2017 Mary Johnston Scholarship Fund.

Five top scholars were chosen for this honor.  To apply, the students were asked to submit a 500-word reflection essay on how a trucker has influenced their life, the way their educational goals resonate with their personalities and to make suggestions for how OOIDA can improve the public image of the professional truck driver.

Thanks to the OOIDA Mary Johnston Scholarship Fund, more than 85 students have continued their studies in this 15-year legacy. Scholarship awards are available each year for children, grandchildren and legal dependents of OOIDA members.  To recognize the value of their hard work, each award is renewable for up to three years.

OOIDA sends a special thanks to Shell Rotella for their continued support. Shell Rotella donated $10,000 to the scholarship fund for the seventh straight year.

The top winner is Scott Jasek who was awarded $2,000.  He may renew it for another three years for a total of $8,000.  Scott the son of member Paul Jasek from Flatonia, TX. Scott graduated from Flatonia High School and is currently attending Texas A&M University.  He is majoring in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

The following students will receive a $1,000 scholarship, also renewable for up to three years:

Grace Lee is the daughter of member David from Mt. Pleasant, NC.  Grace is currently attending Concord First Assembly Academy and is planning on attending either Lenoir-Rhyne University or East Carolina University with a major in Pre-Med Science for Occupational Therapy.

Cameron Wright is the grandson of life member Thomas L. Chaltraw from Boise, ID.  Cameron graduated from Centennial High School in 2014 and is currently enrolled at Boise State University where he is a major in Computer Science Engineering.

Albert Koenig is the son of member Shawn L. Koenig from Belgrade, MT.  Albert will graduate from Belgrade High School in May and has already been accepted at Montana State University where he will major in Agriculture Business.

Austin VanDerslice is the grandson of lifetime member Janice VanDerslice from Seward, NE.  Austin graduated from Seward High School in 2015 and is currently enrolled in WyoTech for Diesel Technology.

Darian Eccles is the granddaughter of life member Tom Niccum from Wabash, IN.  Darian graduated from North White Jr-Sr High School in May 2015.  Darian is currently attending Ball State University with a major in Elementary Education.
