National association opposes Colorado towing group’s attempt to take away rights of truckers

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association expressed opposition to a request for rulemaking in Colorado regarding non-consensual tows of commercial motor vehicles. OOIDA sent a letter to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission expressing concerns that the petition would weaken consumer protections from unscrupulous towing operations.

“We support the current rules which provide truckers and motor carriers a means of contesting unreasonable towing charges,” said Mike Matousek, Manager of Government Affairs for OOIDA.

“Truckers keep getting stuck with towing bills that are arbitrarily inflated by thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. When their trucks get towed, they need immediate access to their personal property, like medications and identification that they have to keep in their trucks since they work and live on the road. The current rules in Colorado ensure that access.”

OOIDA asks that the petition from the Towing and Recovery Professionals of Colorado be denied.
