OOIDA supports bills to provide relief from ELD mandate
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association supports legislation introduced by U.S. Representatives Collin Peterson (MN) and Greg Gianforte (MT) that would provide targeted relief from the electronic logging device mandate to small-business and agriculture haulers.
The Small Carrier Electronic Logging Device Exemption Act of 2018, H.R. 1697, will exempt businesses which operate ten or fewer commercial trucks from the requirements of the ELD mandate.
The Agricultural Business Electronic Logging Device Exemption Act, H.R. 1698, will exempt agricultural businesses.
OOIDA has long challenged the ELD mandate and any purported safety benefits, a position which is supported by at least one preliminary study showing that truck-related crashes have not decreased since the mandate went into effect.
The Association also continues to work with lawmakers and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to develop regulations that address the challenges of truckers while pursuing meaningful improvements to highway safety.
“We appreciate the support of lawmakers like Congressmen Peterson and Gianforte who understand the important role of small-business truckers, which make up the majority of the trucking industry,” said Todd Spencer, president of OOIDA.
