OOIDA response to Alliance group’s drug study
Claims and “research” on driver drug use full of holes
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association responded to an announcement by the Trucking Alliance group that truckers use cocaine more than reported by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“What the Trucking Alliance is claiming cannot possibly be extrapolated to the entire industry,” said Todd Spencer, president of OOIDA. “They really should be taking a closer look at why their carriers are so attractive to potential employees that use illegal drugs. And, any shipper that uses those companies might also take note.”
The OOIDA Foundation conducted a full analysis of the study which is posted here.
OOIDA has long contended that highway safety policies should be tied to data that demonstrates a reduction in crashes involving commercial trucks.
OOIDA reviewed the announcement made by the Alliance and found no reason to believe that crashes would be reduced if the industry adopted the Alliance’s proposal to mandate hair testing.
