A common sense approach has finally been proposed by the federal government regarding how long truck drivers work and drive. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association thanks the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for listening to truck drivers’ concerns and including provisions that make it easier for them to avoid heavy traffic, bad weather and other less than ideal situations.
OOIDA gains victory in legal action against Virginia over hours-of-service citations
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association had filed the lawsuit in early 2018 because Virginia was unlawfully writing warnings and citations for violations against the 30-minute break provision of hours-of-service. That provision had been added to regulations in 2015, but Virginia did not adopt it into state law until late 2017.

OOIDA’s petition spurs HOS reform
A petition by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association played a key role in the government launching an effort to revise hours-of-service regulations. OOIDA looks forward to working with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to safely and responsibly update those standards.The Association’s petition, which was filed in February of this year, was referred to in today’s announcement by FMCSA to revise the hours-of-service regulations.
